News From The School Nurse

Fortunately, the February break slowed down the spread of illnesses circulating through school. There are still a small number of cough/cold/sore throat, “regular” flu, strep throat and “stomach bug” cases being seen in the building.

If your student has moderate to severe symptoms, please keep them home. For students with mild symptoms, please be sure to medicate them at home before school with any over- the -counter cold remedies you feel will make them more comfortable while at school.

Please remember the attendance policy for illnesses:

  • Students must be free from fever for 24 hours without the use of medications such as tylenol or ibuprofen.
  • If positive for strep throat, students must be on antibiotics for 24 hours before returning to school.
  • Students who have experienced vomiting and/or diarrhea must remain out of school for 24 hours after the last episode

Following these precautions can help prevent the spread to other students and allows your child to rest and recover fully. Remember to call the attendance line if your student will be absent.  The risk in Massachusetts for the Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, is low but the “regular” flu is still widespread. Prevention is still the key to staying healthy whether it is COVID-19, the flu or the common cold.  Wash your hands for 20 seconds and cover coughs and sneezes.  If you have travelled over February break to an area with known Coronavirus cases, it is recommended that you report any onset of fever or cold/flu symptoms to your primary care provider.   Please read the Mass DPH Fact Sheet attached to the weekend update for information on the Coronavirus.
