GUIDANCE

The Guidance program at Shaker Lane School is provided by our guidance councillor, Justine Mathurin. During the course of the school year, some students may be referred to Guidance for support in social areas and learning friendship making skills. These friendship groups are small, typically having eight children or less. During the friendship group, the students will have the opportunity to interact with other students while doing fun activities with each other. In doing so, the children will practice and learn appropriate social skills through play and language. Group members practice skills such as sharing, turn taking, cooperation, problem solving, listening and respect for others. Values of the school-wide "HEART" program are often discussed and put into everyday practice. Children can also be seen individually if a need arises. No children are taken for long term guidance sessions unless permission has been obtained from the child's parent or guardian.

Classroom Guidance Curriculum:
Shaker Lane is lucky to have a classroom guidance curriculum called the Second Step Program. It is taught to all students grades pre-k to two. It is designed to reduce impulsive and aggressive behavior in young children, while increasing their level of self-competence. The goal is to build social skills and self-esteem by giving children the tools they need to solve everyday problems.

The Guidance Program is designed to help students:
  1. Make a smooth adjustment into each new school year.
  2. Develop a positive self-esteem, a strong self image, and greater levels of self confidence.
  3. Develop a healthy outlook on their lives and the world around them.
  4. Recognize and accept differences in themselves and others.
  5. Develop a positive and respectful attitude toward their school, teachers, and peers.
  6. Practice approprate social skills and social language.
  7. Help develop skills used in self help and in the decision-making process.
  8. Develop a sense of responsibility.
  9. Begin to develop a sense of the world around them.
  10. Help them understand that they are a valuable and important member in our school and community.
